Dark, Smart, Explicit, Pornographic and Wonderful. Not a film for general consumption.

The critics claimed the movie has no audience. I disagree but still maintain it is not a film for everyone. First, I'm surprised it did not have an NC-17 rating. That said; I think there are enough 40-something former D&D players and comic-book collectors who are salivating for darker, more adult-themed fantasy story lines.

Not for general consumption, but also not a film for the unthinking. However, don't go to see it to pretend to be an intellectual; it's not that deep. But it is nearly 3 hours long and requires attention and examination. If you want a film with mindless action and graphic violence, rent something from Blockbuster; this has a very well-developed plot and makes last year's Dark Knight look like a reading from a kindergarten's story time.

In fact, there is a 50-year history that get unfolded in this alternate-universe dystopia. That history is quite relevant to the direct and indirect plot lines. I applaud that needed scenes were not left to the cutting-room floor just to make the running time more palatable. Clearly, Zack Snyder understood who his audience would be and knew it wouldn't mind.

As much as I seemed to have praised it, this is a very dark film with a pathetic outlook on humanity. The bleak message and the intellectualizing of amoral judgment does leave one feeling disappointed and empty by the end of the film. I don't think this will be the movie of the year, but it is clearly ushering in a new genre of the mature and melancholy fantasy film.
Thank you Mario! But our Princess is in another castle!
