Since I'm a history buff and some of you have history degrees I thought it'd be cool to start a thread about favorite historical themed movies.

My favorites:

Band of Brothers
Barry Lyndon
The Duelists
Lawrence of Arabia
Dr Zhivago
Breaker Morant
Gallipoli
Zulu
A Bridge Too Far
Saving Private Ryan
12 O'clock High
The Right Stuff
From The Earth to the Moon

Lew

Bridge of the River Kui (sp?)
Henry Adams (hbo mini)
Flags of our Fathers
10,000 B.C.  (just kidding)
So many subplots

Cope

Braveheart
Loved The Right Stuff
I hated Alexander

I kind of liked Alexander.  He's one of my heros.  Named my son after him.

Chuck

I was really disappointed with Flags of Our Fathers.  I thought the combat scenes sucked. The book was so much better.  I felt the same way about Blackhawk Down.

Lew

Alexander was so so.  They skipped what I thought was the cool stuff.

We Were Soldiers is really good.

I really enjoyed the Braveheart sequel set 400 years past the original...I think it was called The Patriot. Ok seriously, I really enjoyed it...historical flaws and all. But Mel Gibson always plays a pacifist until the bad guys kills someone he cares about, then he goes berserk.  Kinda surprised that Mary didn't kill all the Romans in Passion of the Christ.

Another history-based movie I enjoyed was Rob Roy.

The story of the hero that doesn't want to be one works sometimes.  Whether is be The Patriot or Spiderman, but I perfer the hero just looking for his chance.

"He's big, I wouldn't fight hime"

"That's why no one will remember your name"

"Give us your coins.  A man can change his stars."

I love the little girl from The Golden Compass.
"I'm fated to be a hero?  Uh, O.K. let's go."

Yes, I took a lot of liberty in the quotes.

Rob Roy is one of my all-time favs....

All's Quiet on the Western Front is a good movie
Enemy at the Gates isn't bad
Glory
Gettysburg
61*
Spencer wants me to place A Knight's Tale on this list
Spartacus
Caligula

Its better to burn out than to fade away

Chuck

Gettysburg is excellent.  Saw Glory again last week.  Really good also.  Love the soundtrack.

A couple that haven't been mentioned that I liked:

Das Boot
Tora! Tora! Tora!

There's a bunch of WWII based movies that are pretty good.

I still remember being in the theatre when the trailer for that came out and Kevin belted out with a horrendously loud roar because he was poking fun at the principal of his High School, who happened to be name McLorrie and was also black...so when the title came on it was hilariously and ironically funny.
