Some Interesting Sites

Mostly critical - but ironically stuff we bitched about too. Our current incarnation is nothing like the printed book either.

On some there are several posts. You might search for "Pelicar" to get to the content.

And a few personal observations that no one may have known or remembered:
1 - "Pelicar" is a slang verb in Spanish meaning "to talk a lot or ramble"
2 - Also, it is an anagram for the word "replica"

These role-players are GNS casualties. They have never perceived the range of role-playing goals and designs, and they frequently commit the fallacies of synecdoche about "correct role-playing." Discussions with them wander the empty byways of realism, genre, completeness, roll-playing vs. role-playing, and balance. They are the victims of incoherent game designs and groups that have not focused their intentions enough. They thought that "show up with a character" was sufficient prep, or thought that this new game with its new setting was going to solve all their problems forever. They are simultaneously devoted to and miserable in their hobby.

This was from the 2nd link.....sound familar...

I found this criticism quite interesting. Because although a glazed-over summary with giving credit to some of the finer points of the book, there was some real truth here. We all have complained about how poor of job and how rushed-to-print the book was.

Nonetheless, outside criticism is interesting to examine because it is not influenced by our in-breeding. Where we are now (and is in no way marketable) is more like co-operative story-writing. Many of the criticisms are less valid today and much of our mechanics have changed, albeit they are still likely to be way to complex. However, as Cope eluded to, we still find ourselves falling victim to our old ways quite often.

Actually I have read the 2nd link twice now....it is a pretty good dissertation on role-playing.  I find myself in many of the topics that he brings up....

Yeah, I've reread it again tonight. It is a really strong and meaningful treatment of the subject of role-playing. I recommend everyone read it...not just the Pelicar criticism piece, but the whole work. There are some gems here specific to us and each of us might want to ponder them for a few moments.
